Essential conversations with kids and teens (for both parents) - with Emma Argall

We’re all increasingly aware that we need to be talking to young people about sex, consent, porn and a whole host of other things that sound pretty stressful, to be honest.

These conversations, though necessary, seem incredibly complicated and very high-stakes. What if we don’t feel equipped? How do we work out what we want to say? Isn’t it going to be super awkward?

Emma has spent the last twenty years pushing through the awkward and grappling with these conundrums with the high school students she teaches and with younger kids in her own parenting. In this four week course, she hopes to inspire and empower parents and significant adults to wade into these tricky spaces and have these essential conversations with the young people we love and care for.

This particular course is unusual in the Greenhouse Training Ground, because men are welcome! Emma is keen for dads to be involved in these conversations too, so this course is designed for both parents to attend. Of course, you’re welcome to attend it as an individual, but please be aware there will be men present. If you would prefer to attend this course with women only - not just mums, but also other carers, grandmas, aunts, family friends, youth leaders and any significant women in the lives of young people - please sign up for the August running of this course, or send us a message and we’ll contact you when a future course is scheduled.

Course Structure

Session One - Why do we need to be having these conversations? We will think through the gospel opportunities here, as well as considering the lay of the land for our young people. We'll equip ourselves to communicate a robust big picture of humanness as the foundation for thinking and talking about sex and relationships.

Session Two - What are the challenges and barriers holding us back when it comes to talking to our kids about sex? What might it have meant for us as parents/carers/significant adults to grow up in the shadow of “purity culture”? How can we overcome these barriers?

Session Three - What do kids need and want from us in this space? This session is all about practical tips for essential conversations with kids from birth to adulthood.

Session Four - Okay, so how do we do it? Practical scenarios, challenging parenting moments, and plenty of time to ask your questions.

Dates: Wednesdays 4, 11, 18, 25 September, 7.45-9.15pm

Cost: $100 per zoom window (or $80 for Greenhouse members - follow this link for your 20% discount)

About the trainer

Emma Argall has worked as a high school teacher for twenty years as well as being a mum to three excellent kids (10, 14 and 15). She is passionate about teenagers and is both fascinated and daunted by the opportunities and challenges of these crucial formative years. Her area of interest is relationship, sex and consent education against the backdrop of an increasingly complex and all-encompassing online world. Emma is passionate about equipping and inspiring her fellow grown-up humans (both those who follow Jesus and those who don’t) to be the kind of adults that our young people need us to be.
