Have you ever wanted to write for children or young adults but are not sure where to start? Or wondered how your faith might influence what you write? ‘Writing for Children from a Christian Worldview’ is a three-part introduction into the exciting yet challenging world of writing for young people.
Session 1 will introduce the wonderful world of creating books for young people.
We’ll start with an overview of the various genres and categories of children’s books and consider what it takes to be a children’s writer. We’ll then take a deep dive analysis of how the Christian world view impacts what and how we write. Whether you’re writing picture books, middle grade or non-fiction for the Christian or general markets, this workshop will equip you with helpful strategies and tools.
Session 2 will focus on creating page turning fiction for children. We’ll discuss the importance of a fast-paced plot and developing relatable characters. From dialogue to description, action to analogy, you’ll learn what to put in, what to take out, and how to include faith-based themes if you want to.
Session 3 will include an introduction to writing picture books and the basics of pursuing publication. We’ll focus on the different contributions authors and illustrators bring to the creation of a picture book. We’ll consider the use of language, imagery and metaphor, drafting, critiquing, rewriting and word count. From there, we’ll discuss tips for submitting to publishers or self-publishing options.
Dates: Course postponed. New dates will be announced soon.
